The right choice between a dedicated trailer tire and an all-position tire comes down to one variable most spec sheets barely mention: how much your trailer scrubs.

What a Dedicated Trailer Tire Is Built For

A trailer-position tire is a specialist. Its tread is shallow β€” typically several thirty-seconds less than a drive tire β€” with a straight rib pattern designed for free-rolling positions that neither steer nor drive. Shallow tread runs cooler, resists the irregular wear that free-rolling axles breed, and rolls with less resistance, which is fuel. The casing underneath is engineered to survive multiple retread cycles, which is where trailer tires quietly earn most of their money for a fleet. On a standard tandem-axle dry van or reefer running highway miles, a dedicated trailer tire is usually the lowest cost-per-mile option on the vehicle.

What an All-Position Tire Is Built For

An all-position tire is a generalist: deeper tread, a more robust shoulder, and a design rated to run on steer, drive, or trailer axles. That versatility costs a little in rolling resistance and price, but it buys durability where trailer duty gets rough β€” and it means one tire specification can cover mixed equipment.

Scrub: The Variable That Decides

Every time a trailer turns, its tires are dragged partly sideways across the pavement β€” that sliding is scrub, and it is the great destroyer of shallow trailer tread. A standard tandem on highway routes scrubs little. A spread axle scrubs constantly by geometry: with the axles ten feet apart, every turn forces the tires to fight each other. Car haulers live in tight terminal lots and steep loading angles. Flatbeds and step decks back into job sites, gravel yards, and staging areas all day.
